Cotton Hijabs For Summer Workouts

Summer heat can be rough. Particularly, if you're an athlete who requires a hijab to go along with the rest of your workout gear.

Here are some tips to help you find a hijab suited for your athletic summer schedule.

Cotton

Although cotton is among the most basic fabrics, innovations in cotton technology have transformed the hijabs on the market for athletes.

  • Jersey: this super soft fabric is light to the touch and feels comfortable right out of the package. Although most cotton hijabs are constructed from single-knit cotton, many athletic brands now offered blended jersey cotton, which reduces the weight and increases the breathability of the fabric. Different brands have proprietary names for these blended fabrics, but the most breathable is spandex.
  • Organic: this earth-friendly type of cotton is gently dyed and processed. Although organic cotton can feel a bit stiff out of the package, after a couple of washes it will soften dramatically. For hijabs, organic cotton can be a great choice for athletes because it holds it's shape a bit better. If your workout routine requires your hijab to stay firmly in place, organic cotton hijabs might be the best choice.

Synthetic

Textiles have evolved rapidly in the past decade. If you've never experimented with a synthetic hijab for your workouts, you don't know what you're missing.

  • Full Synthetic: full synthetic blended hijabs are light, breathable, and resistant to stains and odors. When choosing a synthetic blend hijab, the fit can be difficult at first. Because the fabric is naturally slicker, it can be difficult to hold in place. Many athletes find that choose a slightly larger hijab gives them more fabric to fold and pin, helping them keep the hijab in place. For breathability, predominately rayon and polyester work better in dry heat, while spandex and nylon work better for more humid environments.

Base Layer

Whether you choose a cotton or synthetic hijab, you might find that adding an athletic base layer can help absorb and/or wick away sweat while you're working out.

  • Fitted: fitted base layers fit tightly to your head. Fitted base layers are normally elastic, which makes them easy to take on and off. Many of these fitted base layers are made from synthetic fabrics.
  • Loose: loose base layers are great for absorbing sweat. These loose layers require some practice pinning in place and fitting snuggly over your hair. Most loose base layers are manufactured from cotton.
